Then known by her real name of Norma Jeane, she started out as a model after a photographer spotted her working in a Second World War munitions factory. This image was taken from a Valentine's Day promotion in the 1940s.

Shortly afterwards, she changed her name to Marilyn Monroe and went on to become a Hollywood leading lady with starring roles in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and The Seven Year Itch.
